Anti-Abuse Showcase: Threat Intelligence to Combat Phishing
Article publication date: 22 October 2024.
Earlier this week CleanDNS presented as part of the Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) Secure Hosting Alliance Anti-Abuse Showcase. CleanDNS General Counsel Alan Woods discussed Threat Intelligence to Combat Phishing, as part of the i2Coalition’s initiative for cross-industry insights from leaders in anti-abuse efforts.
The showcase sessions highlighted topics on current landscape, best practices, centralized and standardized reporting, and future objectives for online harm mitigation and anti-abuse efforts with a focus on the hosting industry. As anti-abuse efforts continue to evolve within the hosting sphere, it is important to also emphasize the importance of collaboration and data sharing with other layers of the internet stack, such as domain name providers, working towards the common goal of creating a safter, more secure Internet for all.
Currently, cross-industry efforts of gathering and analyzing information to understand cyber threats remains greatly affected by many factors, most significant being current legislative and contractual obligations, reactive limitations, and industry politics. Looking forward, a significant push towards collaboration between the hosting and domain name sectors emphasizes the goal of better intelligence and data sharing for anti-abuse. Most importantly in all approaches, data that is shared must be presented demonstrating the value of additional data points for consideration and why they should be considered evidence.
In tune with the theme of other presentations in the showcase, Woods discussed how CleanDNS operates on the core principle of evidence-based escalations, and the pillar of of the appropriate action taken, by the appropriate party, at the appropriate time. In addition, CleanDNS emphasizes evidence over inference, wherein reports must show how such an indicator is considered a factor of abuse. As a leading provider of abuse management and online harm mitigation, CleanDNS takes pride in the importance of evidence-based escalations with actions and advocacy aligned each step of the way.
Each presentation of the showcase emphasized a unique perspective of current and future outlook for anti-abuse efforts, and CleanDNS was thrilled to be a part of the lineup. It was energizing to hear each presenter’s insight on best practices, future considerations, and new ideas for mitigating online abuse, all encapsulating the ways in which cross-industry collaboration and knowledge sharing can bring us closer to a safer, more secure Internet for all.
