ICANN82 Community Forum
Article publication date: 24 March 2025.
The CleanDNS team attended the ICANN82 Community Forum in Seattle, Washington for a jampacked schedule of meetings, presentations, sessions, and more in the Emerald city.
A standout session during the week was Monday’s NARALO (North American Regional At-Large Organization) Roundtable on AI and DNS Abuse, which aimed to better understand the emerging capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in prevention and detection of DNS Abuse. During the session, panelists and participants discussed insights within cybersecurity contexts for how AI technologies can identify, analyze, and potentially mitigate patterns of abuse.
CleanDNS CEO Jeff Bedser discussed current and future pursuits of AI in DNS Abuse and online harm mitigation, highlighting how CleanDNS uses AI to improve tactics of DNS Abuse and online harm detection, disruption, mitigation, and remediation. As discussed in the roundtable, one of the keys to effective mitigation of abuse is rapid detection, an area where AI can be employed for image capture and analysis. Jeff discussed how CleanDNS provides a solution that accelerates the efforts fighting online harms via a core data aggregation and capture model. As a part of our virtue-cycle, we coordinate with those that detect and report abuses and those that seek to mitigate and remediate. The roundtable also discussed potential pitfalls and areas of caution in the employment of AI and ML models. CleanDNS continues to emphasize evidence-based escalations and the importance of the appropriate action taken (or not taken), by the appropriate party, at the appropriate time in abuse remediation efforts.
The full NARALO Roundtable on AI and DNS Abuse session can be accessed via the official ICANN schedule. We encourage those interested in the future of DNS Abuse and online harm mitigation to review the session and listen to the participants’ insights.
During our whirlwind week at ICANN82 CleanDNS team members also took part in sessions including the GAC Discussion on DNS Abuse, CCNSO DNS Abuse Standing Committee Session, GAC and SSAC Joint Meeting, and more. With the new round of TLDs on the horizon, the meeting also was buzzing with excitement and it was wonderful to see energized discussions and new faces. We were thrilled to meet with clients, partners, colleagues, and many new friends during the week and take part in conversations surrounding abuse mitigation, disruption, and best practices. We look forward to the upcoming ICANN83 Policy Forum in Prague, and hope to see you there.
